Tessen – The War Fan
In feudal Japan, the tessen was a fan that concealed iron ribs. At first glance, it appeared fragile and decorative, but in the hands of the samurai it became a subtle weapon: used to defend, deflect arrows, or surprise in combat when the sword could not be drawn.
Its symbolism goes beyond battle. The tessen embodies the union of opposites: beauty and blade, calm and power, fragility and resilience. Like the butterflies surrounding it in this painting, it represents delicacy that hides an unexpected strength.
